Halton House
Gillian Hammerton's Halton Childhood
Halton was a small village in Cheshire with a tiny population. Our house had been the manor house with 7 acreas of gardens. The old Norman castle on top of the hill and situated near the old church. The countryside was undulating. There was a village sweet shop,a butchers,a wool shop,a post office and a general store .There was a tiny village school situated the other side of the hill to which all children could be seen walking across the fields.

The Front of Halton House.
The Front of Halton House. My bedroom was the top right window. The middle top window has clearly now been converted to a room but then it was the window of the top landing hallway. There was a wall each side of the then old fashioned gate and an incredable brass door nob which it was my job every day to sparklingly clean. The house went back a long way with another wing a washhouse, apple house ect. There were stables, a chapel, two orchards, pool, duck garden with ducks, tennis court, coppice, rose garden, very large vegetable gardens which the gardener Mr Gardener worked on daily, two meadows which we scythed the poppied hay for the duck house. The apple orchard was swarmed with startlings every evening and we clapped and waved them off as they swarmed back into the vast sky.
